Antique Bronze Radiator: How To Make The Colour *Pop*

  • Colours

10 Mar 2025

Perhaps one of the biggest mysteries we have to contend with here at CIRC HQ is our antique bronze radiator. This colour-changing chameleon can look completely different depending on the placement and its surroundings.

While this can lead to some confusion when unpacking the radiator for the first time, rest assured it’s definitely the right colour. It just happens to be a hugely versatile choice that can look different depending on factors such as the lighting.

In some lights, the antique bronze shade looks like a bright gold shade, and in others it takes on a moodier, deep mocha hue. Depending on which way your room is facing, it can look different throughout the day – such is the beauty of colour theory.

If you’ve seen our antique bronze radiator looking brassy and bright and want to know how to replicate this look, read on to learn our top tips to help the colour pop with lustre. There are also ways to place this radiator in your home to achieve a more subdued finish, with a deep mocha shade.

Introducing the antique bronze shade

Antique bronze is a deep brown shade with a subtle metallic satin finish that helps to reflect the light. The surface of the cast iron radiator is not perfectly smooth, so it never achieves a polished or glossy finish, but the look is still incredibly lustrous. Under studio lights, the finish is almost golden and offers a decadent look – particularly when you choose an ornate radiator style.

In darker rooms or without direct light on the radiator, this stunning shade takes on a deep mocha hue. It’s an ideal choice for a cosy living space with mid-century modern influences, as it adds to the sophisticated and warming colour palette. If this is the look you’re going for, choose a simpler design with sleek lines like the traditional 4-column cast iron radiator.

How placement impacts the bronze shade

Where you are planning to place your radiator will have a big impact on the appearance of the colour. If you would like to achieve a bright, golden shade that truly pops, we recommend the following:

  • Consider placing opposite/adjacent to direct light from windows
  • Place the radiator in a larger room as this will increase the light
  • Consider using it in a south-facing room to make the most of the sunlight
  • Keep the area uncluttered and fuss-free to keep emphasis on the radiator
  • Think about secondary lighting around the radiator to enhance the colour
  • Pair it with gold or brass valves and shrouds to enhance the shine

If you love the deeper, moodier look of the deep mocha shade, we recommend the following:

  • Consider placing your radiator under windows so that direct light flows over radiator rather than directly on it
  • Place the radiator in a smaller space such as an entranceway
  • Place it in a north-facing room, or under the window in a south-facing room

How background impacts the bronze shade

It’s not only the room placement and the surroundings that will allow you to enhance to minimise the lustre of the radiator. The wall you place it against will also impact the shade. Contrasting with darker shades will place the emphasis on the radiator, which can help to increase the brightness when paired with natural light or secondary lighting.

Against a light wall in a warm shade, the radiator will often look darker, which can help to downplay the gold hues if this isn’t something you would like to emphasise.

How can you tell how it will look in your home?

If you aren’t sure about the colour or the placement, we recommend ordering a bush end paint sample. These are small radiator parts painted with the exact same finish that we use on our radiators. This is the best way to see how the radiator shade will look in your home so you can try the placement in different areas.

Remember that colours can look very different on different screens. The best way to see how this radiator colour will look in your home is to order a physical sample.

Vintage Cast Iron Radiator Covers: When You Need One – and When You Don’t

  • Style & Inspiration

10 Mar 2025

The cast iron radiator cover is a relic from another time, but homeowners are still curious about whether this feature is necessary. For the record, we don’t recommend cast iron radiator covers for our radiators. Cast iron radiators are a stylish addition to your decor, so why would you want to cover them up?

In this guide, we’re looking at where this trend started, how it has evolved, and the alternatives to covering your cast iron radiators today. This should help you to determine if you even need to cover your radiators, or if you can make them a focal point of your interiors.

A brief history of cast iron radiator covers

Cast iron radiator covers came into vogue in the 19th Century. Radiators of the time were bulky and had complex and unsightly pipework. It’s also worth noting that these radiators were often heated with steam, which meant they got incredibly hot. To save residents from scalding temperatures, homeowners would cover their radiators to provide some protection against burns.

These covers were often made from wood or metal and had mesh screens and highly decorative fretwork. The more ornate, the better. These became a status symbol, and a sign of a sophisticated and refined home.

As trends in radiators shifted towards gas-powered central heating and aluminium panel radiators, covers remained popular in homes trying to achieve a vintage look. By using a cover, it wasn’t clear what type of radiators you were covering, so you could have original cast iron radiators.

Today, radiator covers might be used to hide unsightly radiators, so we don’t think they’re relevant for modern cast iron radiators. Our radiators are intended to be part of the decor, so covering them seems counterintuitive. Minimal pipework and refined designs make our radiators something to shout about, not something to hide.

Do you need a cast iron radiator cover?

In short, you don’t need cast iron radiator covers. Modern radiators look the part and also offer safety upgrades that mean you don’t need to worry about them getting too hot.

Perhaps the only benefit you might enjoy from covering your cast iron radiators would be minimal cleaning. A covered radiator won’t collect as much dust – or this dust will at least be less visible.

We prefer to grab a radiator brush and give them a good clean once a month rather than cover them up. Dust build-up on your radiators can make them less effective, so cleaning is far better than covering.

Popular ways to minimise a cast iron radiator

Perhaps you’re thinking about a radiator cover because you want to minimise the radiator in your interior design scheme. Thankfully, there are simple ways you can incorporate cast iron radiators into any room, even if the space is awkward or difficult.

We love the way Greg Penn from @ManWithAHammer has made cast iron radiators a feature in this room by placing them underneath a window seat. We’ll take a cosy window seat over a radiator cover any day!

In this serene bedroom, the radiator is placed in an unused space in the bay window. This is a highly efficient spot to place your radiators, as it helps to reduce heat loss from the room. It also makes use of a difficult space, while also creating a visual focal point.

What are the disadvantages of radiator covers?

Covering your radiator will reduce the heat output and prevent air from circulating around the radiator. Cast iron radiators work by ambiently heating the space around them, so they don’t need air currents as much as a modern panel radiator. To maximise the benefits of a modern cast iron radiator, it’s best to leave them uncovered.

The radiator cover could also interfere with your thermostatic radiator valves. The cover will retain the heat under the cover, making the TRVs think that the room is much warmer than it is. This could lead your TRVs to switch off before the room has reached the desired heat.

If you’re set on covering your radiators with vintage cast iron radiator covers, make sure you clean them regularly to help them to work as efficiently as possible. You should also ensure sufficient clearance on the top of the radiator so the cover doesn’t overheat and become a hazard.

Spotlight On Gunmetal Grey: A Versatile and Dynamic Shade

  • Colours

1 Mar 2025

We love a versatile bit of furniture. Something that plays with the light and forces a fresh perspective throughout the day. While you might think of radiators as being static and just a little bit boring, we believe they can be just as much a part of the decor as any other piece of furniture in your home.

We offer metallic, matt and satin shades to suit a range of interiors. Our cast iron radiator colours are sympathetic to the style and effortlessly timeless. So, rather than choosing a colour that might look a little dated in a few years, you can opt for a hard-wearing and versatile colour that blends seamlessly with your interiors.

Like the antique bronze shade, gunmetal grey is a subtly shimmering shade that can look very different depending on the light. It’s one of our favourite things about this colour selection, as it transforms the radiator into a dynamic element in your home.

About gunmetal grey

Gunmetal grey is a deep grey shade often compared to anthracite or slate grey. It’s a cool-toned shade with a subtle metallic finish that helps to reflect the light and elevate the radiator colour.

Don’t worry, it’s not an intense glitter finish, but the paint contains metallic particles which result in a subtle sheen. It’s also not a glossy finish, as the surface of the cast iron is textured to prevent this.

You’ll notice in photographs that this shade can look light grey to deep grey depending on the lighting. It’s a lot like the antique bronze in this respect, which can also appear to be bright gold or muted brown.

On the ornate radiator styles, the metallic finish helps to enhance the design as it emphasises the relief of the design by creating highlights and lowlights.

We recommend ordering paint finish samples if you’re not sure how this will look in your home. This is far better than relying on computer and phone screens, which can make colours appear very different to how they will look in real life.

Why we love gunmetal grey

From a pure maintenance perspective, we love this shade for its ability to hide the dust and marks. But the perks of the gunmetal grey go way beyond this.

It’s a cool-toned shade that works well in both modern and traditional interiors. The deep colour allows the radiator to blend into the background, but the hint of metallic elevates the shade and draws the eye, particularly when the light catches it.

A note on radiator paint colours

We don’t offer every colour under the sun for a very good reason – by sticking to a carefully selected palette of versatile colours, we can pass the savings on to our customers. This is why we’re up to 40% cheaper than our competitors.

If you have your heart set on a particular shade, you are welcome to order your radiators with a primer only and arrange to have them painted in a custom shade.

But the vast majority of customers are happy with our versatile choice of paint colours. Black, Grey, Cream and Bronze offer a mix of warm and cool tones that are adaptable to any interior.

Our two best selling shades are Gunmetal Grey followed closely by Matt Black. Of course, you don’t have to be swayed by what is popular. If you have a vision for your home, we can help you to bring it to life with stunning cast iron radiators that look the part and stand the test of time.
