Cast Iron Radiator Wall Stays
Cast iron radiator wall stays are a simple but essential addition for securing cast iron radiators to the wall, helping prevent tipping or movement over time. We recommend using one stay per radiator, or two for anything over 10 sections long, to ensure a safe and stable installation.

Choosing your Cast Iron Radiator Wall Stays
At the Cast Iron Radiator Centre, we stock a wide range of cast iron radiator wall stays to support and compliment your chosen radiator. Our cast iron radiators are designed to be freestanding, however due to their weight and depth, wall stays are recommended in order to provide additional support.
Where cast iron radiators are being installed in busy hallways or well-trodden areas we strongly recommend cast iron radiator wall stays for the purpose of providing extra stability.
Walls stays are also highly recommended for larger heavier radiators.
Cast iron radiator wall stays are used to gently anchor the radiator to the wall, helping to prevent movement while allowing the radiator to expand and contract naturally as it heats and cools. Whether you’re fitting a smaller radiator in a hallway or a larger, multi-column radiator in a living space, the addition of cast iron radiator stays ensures long term stability without compromising the character of the radiator.
Do I need wall stays for a cast iron radiator?
In most installations, wall stays are strongly recommended. Cast iron radiators are extremely heavy, and wall stays help prevent accidental movement, particularly in busy areas or homes with uneven floors. While some smaller radiators may remain stable without them, wall stays provide added reassurance and are considered best practice.
How many cast iron radiator wall stays should I use?
We recommend that radiators up to 10 sections will need one wall stay, while larger or longer radiators will require two wall stays. The exact number can vary depending on radiator size, wall type, and positioning, so it’s always worth considering the overall balance of the installation and aesthetics. The only variance will be that, due to their design, the traditional 9 column radiators do not require any wall stays as they are stable without.
Can cast iron radiator stays be used on all wall types?
Yes, but the fixing method will vary. Solid masonry walls offer the most straightforward installation, while stud or plasterboard walls may require alternative fixing methods or additional support. It’s important that the wall stay is securely anchored into a suitable structural point.
Will wall stays affect how my radiator heats up?
No. Wall stays are designed to allow for natural expansion and contraction as the radiator warms and cools. When correctly fitted, they provide stability without restricting heat output or placing stress on the radiator or pipework.
What finishes are available?
At the Cast Iron Radiator Centre we stock an extensive range of finishes including brass, copper, nickel and chrome. Your radiator wall stays will be visible, so remember to choose a finish that complement your radiator, valves, or pipework.
